Handfastings

Blessings and peace be upon you,
as you step into the ancient path of love and union.

Handfasting is an old Druidic rite—a sacred weaving of hands and hearts beneath the watchful eyes of the Elements, the Trees, and the Stars. It is a ceremony of soul-bonding, witnessed by Nature and Spirit, where vows are spoken not just with words, but with breath, presence, and intention.

As a Ovate and High Priestess I offer ceremonies rooted in the turning of the Wheel, the whispers of the land, and the deep remembering of love as a sacred path.

May your union be blessed with harmony, joy, and the eternal flow of Awen.

We offer Naming Ceremonies and Handfasting

Handfasting Ceremonies: A Sacred Union of Souls

Handfasting is a deeply symbolic, heart-centred ceremony that honours the spiritual and emotional bond between two people choosing to walk the path of life together. Rooted in ancient Celtic and Pagan traditions, it is a sacred ritual of love, unity, and intention — where hands are gently bound together with ribbons or cords to represent the weaving of two lives.

In a handfasting, we honour not only the love shared in the present moment, but also the soul connection that brought you together and the future you are choosing to co-create. Whether you see it as a spiritual wedding, a vow renewal, or a personal declaration of love, this ceremony is tailored to reflect your unique story and beliefs.

Each element — the colours of the cords, the spoken vows, the blessing of the elements — carries meaning. You may choose to include fire for passion, water for emotion, earth for stability, and air for communication. Some couples choose to have a handfast ceremony within a sacred circle, beneath a tree, or surrounded by nature and loved ones. Others prefer a more private ritual — quiet, meaningful, and deeply personal.

As a celebrant and intuitive, I offer bespoke handfasting ceremonies that honour your path, your energy, and the sacred connection you share. Whether you’re celebrating a commitment, a marriage, or simply love itself, your handfasting will be written and held with care, beauty, and blessing. Together, we’ll create something unforgettable — a ceremony that speaks to your hearts and stands as a sacred moment of unity, love, and soul truth.

Handfasting is an ancient ritual of union that dates back to pre-Christian Celtic and Pagan traditions. Originating in the British Isles and northern Europe, it was once the most common way for couples to pledge their love — a sacred bond made with heart, not paperwork. The term “handfasting” comes from the Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon words meaning to strike a bargain by joining hands. This symbolic act became known as a “trial marriage” or “year and a day” union, allowing couples to live together and truly commit before formalising their vows.

In early communities, handfastings were deeply spiritual and often held outdoors, blessed by the elements, the land, and the community. The binding of hands with ribbons or cords represented the weaving of two lives into one path. These ceremonies were often officiated by wise women, druids, or community elders.

With the rise of church influence and legal marriage contracts, handfasting faded from mainstream use — but it was never lost. It remained alive in folklore, poetry, and heart memory. And now, it is returning.

Today, more and more couples are turning to handfasting to mark their love in a way that feels deeply personal, spiritual, and rooted in meaning. Whether part of a wedding, vow renewal, or independent union ceremony, handfasting offers a sacred, soul-honouring alternative to traditional rites.

This resurgence reflects a collective desire to reconnect with ancient wisdom and the natural world. Couples are seeking ceremonies that reflect who they truly are — wild, tender, intuitive, and free. Handfasting speaks to the soul.

As we remember the old ways, we bring them into the new — not to recreate the past, but to root ourselves in love that is conscious, creative, and beautifully alive.

I chose to have a handfasting ceremony myself to celebrate the renewal of vows on my 25th wedding anniversary. It was one of the most powerful and soul-deep experiences of my life — a sacred pause to honour the love that has grown, endured, and evolved over time. The ritual was rich with symbolism, emotion, and presence. In that moment, with our hands bound and hearts open, I felt the profound magic of being witnessed, held, and re-committed in love.

That personal experience inspires the way I now hold handfastings for others — with reverence, intuition, and a deep understanding of how meaningful this rite can be at any stage of life or relationship.
